Budgets and Direct Payments Explained

Learn about the different ways your care budget can be managed and how direct payments give you more control over your care services.

Understanding Budgets and Direct Payments for Care

If you have undergone a social care assessment and it has been agreed that you are entitled to support, you will be allocated a budget to pay for your care and services. There are three main ways that your money can be managed to help cover the cost of your support:

1. Personal Budget

A personal budget is an amount of money given to you by social services to cover the cost of care and support services. This budget is managed by social services, the authority responsible for providing support to individuals in need.

2. Individual Budget

An individual budget combines funds from multiple sources. It includes money from social services and, in some cases, additional funds from other providers. This combined budget allows you to pay for the care and support you need, just like a personal budget.

3. Direct Payment

Direct payments are funds paid directly into your bank account by the local council. With direct payments, you have the flexibility to manage the funds and arrange care services according to your needs. The local council is responsible for making sure you receive the necessary support.
